Despite the Rohnert Park City Council’s budget cut decisions this week, the city’s Spreckels Center for the Peforming Arts is still putting on shows.

“The current season will not be affected,” said the city’s arts specialist, Gene Abravaya. “We still have two great theater pieces soon to open, ‘The Gin Game’ in mid-March and ‘I Am My Own Wife’ in late April.”

The center also will offer music and dance this spring, with contemporary Hawaiian music by HAPA on March 27,  and a performance by Company C Contemporary Dance on April 24.

Based on the city council vote Tuesday, Feb. 23, the center ultimately will discontinue its current policy of scheduling both Spreckels’ own productions and shows staged by outside organizations that rent the hall.

Starting July 1, the beginning of the next fiscal year,  Spreckels will be a rental facility exclusively.

“Programming at that point will depend on the companies that choose to rent here,” Abravaya explained. “We hope the numerous theater companies in town will want to take advantage of its use. Many dance companies already use our facility and now that the doors are no longer in danger of being shut, that opportunity will still be available to them.”
