Here’s a public art project that’s on the right track.

The North Coast’s colorful Skunk Train, in partnership with the Arts Council of Mendocino County, has commissioned two artists, Casey Koerner of San Francisco and Janet Self of Mendocino, to embellish and enhance the train’s rail car No. 699.

Each artist painted a side, and their work — titled “Mendocino County Mobile Memento” — will be unveiled to the public at 6 p.m. Friday, April 2, at a reception that runs from 5 to 8 p.m.  at the Skunk Train depot in Fort Bragg.
