Juan Carlos

Juan Carlos of Santa Rosa will be one of five stand-up comedians performing Saturday, Sept. 25, at the legendary Purple Onion nightclub in San Francisco.

Carlos, 31, moved to Sonoma County from Mexico with his parents when he was 9, and went on to attend Elsie Allen High School and Santa Rosa Junior College.

The training he got in the SRJC theater program helped propel him into a stand-up career, and performances at comedy clubs throughout the Bay Area.

The comedian draws on his background and daily life for his material.

“My comedy is very situational, about the ridiculous things that happen to me,” Carlos said.

One sample line: “I have such a thick accent that whenever I go to a restaurant and ask for a table, they always give me an application to work there.”

The Purple Onion is at 140 Columbus Ave. There will be two shows Saturday, at 8 and 10 p.m. Admission: $20. Information: purpleonionlive.com.
