'The Deep' by Kathleen Thompson

Sebastopol artist Kathleen Thompson is not a newcomer. She has been in Sonoma County for 25 years, working with wax to master a technique known as encaustic painting.

But her work got a big boost last week with the opening of the “Waxing Poetic” exhibit at the Hewitt Gallery of Art at Marymount Manhattan College in New York.

Thompson was one of four artists nationwide invited to participate in the show, which runs through Jan. 12.

“It was very exciting to be included with the three other artists from across the country, from New Jersey, New Mexico and  Utah,” Thompson said.

Thompson teaches an encaustic workshop class through the community education department at Santa Rosa Junior College.
