For some inexplicable reason, museums seldom seem to get due respect as a great venue for special occasions.

I’ve never understood why. I once attended a banquet at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., with priceless artifacts everywhere, and columnist Art Buchwald as guest speaker. It was memorable, to say the least.

Fortunately, the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art in Sonoma has long recognized its own strength as a site for social events, hosting a series of “Mix” parties aimed at adults who want something a little different from the usual bar scene.

The museum hosts its latest function, a 21-and-over,  after-hours party with Sonoma DJ Lionize playing dance music, from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, May 7.

Guests can try an art project led by Rosemary McNeely and themed to fit the current ‘Eco Chic’ exhibition of sustainable Swedish fashions. The show also features environmental installations by Marin artist Daniel McCormick.

Admission to MIX is free for museum members. Nonmembers can buy a one-year membership for a discounted price of $25. Membership includes free admission to exhibitions year-round.

Memberships will be available at the door, or online at www.svma.org/mix.html.

The museum is at 551 Broadway. Information: www.svma.org, (707) 939-7862.
