'Free Parking on Tuesdays,' an homage to Julian Schnabel by Terrence Howell

Terence Howell

Artist Terence Howell is man about town. He showed his paintings last winter at Louie’s Coffee Shop in Santa Rosa, and last month at Borders Books, before the chain liquidated.

Now he’s opening a show Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Santa Rosa’s YMCA, 1111 College Ave. The will be a reception for the artist from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12.

The exhibit, which runs through Nov. 10, includes the work that Howell was showing at Borders — five large-scale oil paintings on board, paying homage to American realist painter, photographer and sculptor Thomas Eakins.

The new show also includes three large mixed-media works on board, created as an homage to New York artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel.

Originally from Memphis, Howell moved to Sonoma County in 1996 after seven years in Mendocino. Recently, he has been showing his work at a variety of venues, as an alternative to traditional galleries.
