Tim Kniffin, a Santa Rosa actor who has divided his time successfully between Sonoma County and the rest of the Bay Area, has a new show opening in Berkeley.

The Berkeley Playhouse production of “The Sound of Music,” featuring Kniffin as Captain Von Trapp, opens Oct. 27 at the Julia Morgan Theatre in Berkeley.

“The show is my first for the Berkeley Playhouse,” Kniffin said.

Bay Area actress Sharon Rietkerk also makes her Berkeley Playhouse debut as Maria, the novice nun recruited to take care of the widowed Von Trapp’s seven children.

“The children’s roles are all double-cast, so I have 14 little Von Trapps running around,” Kniffin joked.

Most recently, Kniffin appeared in “Twelfth Night” in Napa and “110 In The Shade” at the Cinnabar Theater in Petaluma.

In 2008, Kniffin co-starred in Gore Vidal’s “The Best Man” at Berkeley’s Aurora Theatre. The San Francisco Bay Area Critics Circle named the show the best ensemble performance of the year, and the best overall drama production for theaters with 100-300 seats.

“The Sound of Music” runs through Dec. 2 in Berkeley.

Admission: $17-35.
