'The Artist as Tokyo Joe,' by Roberto Chavez

Los Angeles artist Roberto Chavez has worked for decades as both a painter and a teacher. Now, at age 80, he is recognized as a major force in California art.

The Santa Rosa Junior College will display 60 of his paintings and drawings, including several very large pieces, Nov. 15 through Dec. 13 in the Agrella Art Gallery in the Doyle Library on campus, 1501 Mendocino Ave.

The exhibit, “Roberto Chavez, Paintings and Drawings,” opens with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15.

Chavez grew up in East Los Angeles, and his work reflects that background, as well as dealing with social ills. His work includes includes still lifes, nudes and portraiture.

“Roberto is really accomplished. His work is sensual, emotional, authentic and imaginative. It’s just flat-out beautiful,” said Robert Ross, curator of the exhibit.

Gallery hours: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday. Closed Fridays and Sundays.
