A detail from "Big Boy" by Monty Monty

Graton artist Monty Monty, one of Sonoma County’s most popular artistic mavericks, is known for his whimsical creations assembled from found objects and long-lost curios.

His latest exhibit, titled “Monty Monty’s Traveling Air Show and Aeronautical Wonders,” opens Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Finley Community Center at 2060 W. College Ave. in Santa Rosa.

The show will continue from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, through Feb. 7.

Monty reassembles broken toys and turn-of-the-century tools into artworks with sly titles. He finds viewers like figuring out what he used to make each piece.

“It’s like a three-dimensional puzzle,” he has said. “It’s not just what it is, but also what it was.”

There will be a reception for the artist from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Finley Community Center.
