Charlie Haden

This summer’s Healdsburg Jazz Festival includes a two-day tribute to jazz bassist Charlie Haden and other headliner performances by Charles Lloyd with Jason Moran, and the Fred Hersch Trio.

The 15th annual festival will run from May 31 through June 9 at various indoor and outdoor venues around Healdsburg.

On the first weekend, a two-day tribute June 1-2 will honor Charlie Haden with the 12-piece Liberation Music Orchestra featuring Carla Bley, Quartet West with Ravi Coltrane, plus Bill Frisell, Geri Allen, Lee Konitz, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and more artists to be announced.

The second weekend will host an exclusive 2013 U.S. engagement with the Charles Lloyd-Jason Moran Duo, a special evening with the Fred Hersch Trio, and the Marcus Shelby Orchestra with the Healdsburg Jazz Festival’s Freedom Jazz Choir.

“The purpose of life is to serve God, and I do this through music,” says the legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd. Charles Lloyd fell in love with the Vedas during the Ramakrishna Mission movement during the ’60s in the States. In fact, the jazz man took a break in his career to attain a higher state of mental awareness under the guidance of gurus at a Vedanta temple in Santa Barbara. His travels took him everywhere other than India.Lloyd finally comes to India to play for the annual barsi celebration of Ustad Alla Rakha Khan as part of Sangam – a trio completed by Ustad Zakir Hussain and Eric Harland. The concert will also honour the tabla maestro Kishan Maharaj, who passed away last year. Click here for more at the Mumbai Mirror.
