Michelle Shocked

Dean Biersch, owner of the three North Bay HopMonk Taverns, has cancelled singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked’s March 29 show at HopMonk’s Novato venue.

The cancellation was prompted by Shocked’s anti-gay rant during a performance on Sunday night, March 17, at Yoshi’s in San Francisco, which has sparked a firestorm of online comment.

Entertainment Weekly reported ”… her comments onstage … effectively cleared out the venue once offended concertgoers began leaving. ”

Tweets from those who attended the concert included,   “… she said gay marriage would cause the end of the world.”

Shocked’s Facebook page describes her as  “your average anarchist skateboard punk-rock born-again Christian.”

“Due to comments made by Michelle Shocked at Yoshi’s in San Francisco last night, March 17, we have decided to cancel our show with Michelle on March 29,” Biersch said in a brief statement issued today (Monday, March 18.)

Refunds for the Novato show can be made at place of purchase.

There are also HopMonk Taverns in Sebastopol and Sonoma.

This is proof that “Free speech” is only free if you are a liberal.

That’s weird. All these years I thought Michelle Shocked was gay herself.

Thank you Dean; I will make a point of visiting your establishment and spending money there to support your actions!

A person not afraid of voicing her views on gays, I hate gays and everything they stand for. They need desperate mental health help, “I was born this way” doesnt cut it. I’m behind you 100% Michelle, too bad the owner of the club is an idiot and liberal gay lover.

Freedom of speech (and/or artistic expression) censored in Sebastopol.

You right wing tools who are cheering her had better think twice. Besides being born-again, Michelle is also a hardcore “redistribute the wealth” lefty when it comes to economic side of things, and remains one to this day. She continues to wholeheartedly support the Occupy movement. So keep in mind that she hates you idiots as much as she hates gays. A very confused woman, she is.

Freedom of speech refers to the interaction of citizens and the Government. Freedom of speech doesn’t require private individuals to give a stage to those with whom they disagree. Canceling a concert isn’t a violation of free speech. It may be censorship, but it is a protected form of censorship.

It’s not so much blocking freedom of speech as much as smart business sense. If people not only cleared out of Yoshi’s, but commented how they were offended and gave her bad press, who would want to see her? Especially in one of the most diverse states in the country. God, I don’t know why you people have so much hate for something you have nothing to do with. It’s not illegal, it doesn’t hurt anyone and they are happy. Probably happier than you if something like homosexuality bothers you that much. Smart move Dean. I will shake your hand when I see you at one of your restaurants.

Ah, what short memories these haters have. They were cool with condemning the Dixie Chicks back in the day.
