“Local living treasure” is probably one of those  phrases that has lost much of its meaning through overuse, and should be retired.

But before we ban that cliche, let’s use it just one more time to describe a man who really deserves it.

Maurice Lapp, 87, known to everyone as Maury, started teaching art at Santa Rosa Junior College in 1956. He still teaches part-time there, and paints nearly every day at his Santa Rosa home studio.

His painting career is not a hobby. Lapp’s work has been shown in San Francisco at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor and the De Young Museum.

“I have been fortunate enough to express myself with paint, brush and emotion,” Lapp wrote recently.

He’ll be honored at a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 12, at My Daughter the Framer in the Corrick’s Stationery & Gifts store, 637 Fourth St., Santa Rosa.

The exhibit, titled “A Half-Century of Painting,” opened April 1 at Corrick’s and continues through May 31.

“I have the pleasure of showing a significant portion of my paintings — some done within the past few months and a large number going back decades,” Lapp added.
