Healdsburg holds memorial for jazz great Charlie Haden

Healdsburg Jazz, sponsor of the town’s annual jazz festival, will present a special tribute Oct. 12 in memory of famed bassist Charlie Haden at the SHED Cafe in Healdsburg. Haden, who was honored with a two-day celebration at the 2013 Healdsburg Jazz Festival, died July 11 this year in Los Angeles at age 76. Healdsburg Jazz Festival line-up announced

The lineup for this summer’s Healdsburg Jazz Festival will include “Celebration of the Blues,” a two-day mini-festival May 31-June 1 at Santa Rosa’s Jackson Theater. The festival within a festival will star blues harmonica virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite of Geyserville and jazz saxophonist Joshua Redman. Madrona Manor stages Sinatra salute

John DeMers, a Bay Area crooner who specializes in singing Frank Sinatra tunes, will perform Wednesday, Nov. 20, at “Come Fly With Me,” a fund-raising concert for the Healdsburg Jazz Festival. Healdsburg Jazz Fest and Charlie Musselwhite launch online fundraising drive

Blues harmonica star Charlie Musselwhite of Geyserville teamed up this week with the Healdsburg Jazz Festival to launch an online fundraising campaign for next year’s event. Posted on the fundraising site Indiegogo, the Healdsburg Jazz Fall Fundraiser seeks donations from $10 to $2,500. “We need to continue raising money year-round to keep our organization healthy,” said Jessica Felix, the festival’s artistic director, on the Indiegogo web page for the campaign. Artist, poet and jazz star Oliver Lake performs June 29 in Healdsburg

Healdsburg Jazz presents Oliver Lake, poet, painter and and musician, in two performances, and 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Healdsburg Center for the Arts. Lake will play flute and saxophone solos and recite his poetry. New Freedom Jazz Choir performs in Santa Rosa

The new HJF (Healdsburg Jazz Festival) Freedom Jazz Choir, a chorus of more than 100 voices, led by jazz bassist Marcus Shelby and accompanied by his 17-piece orchestra, will perform Saturday, May 18, in Santa Rosa. Healdsburg mixes wine, food and music with the third annual Jazz on the Menu event, coming up Thursday, Feb. 7. Healdsburg Jazz Festival wins $20,000 grant

The National Endowment for the Arts announced today (Tuesday, Nov. 27) that it is awarding a $20,000 grant to next summer’s Healdsburg Jazz Festival. The grant will support a two-day tribute, June 1 and 2,  to Southern California bassist, composer and bandleader Charlie Haden.
