Michelle Shocked

Dean Biersch, owner of the three North Bay HopMonk Taverns, has cancelled singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked’s March 29 show at HopMonk’s Novato venue.

The cancellation was prompted by Shocked’s anti-gay rant during a performance on Sunday night, March 17, at Yoshi’s in San Francisco, which has sparked a firestorm of online comment.

Entertainment Weekly reported ”… her comments onstage … effectively cleared out the venue once offended concertgoers began leaving. ”

Tweets from those who attended the concert included,   “… she said gay marriage would cause the end of the world.”

Shocked’s Facebook page describes her as  “your average anarchist skateboard punk-rock born-again Christian.”

“Due to comments made by Michelle Shocked at Yoshi’s in San Francisco last night, March 17, we have decided to cancel our show with Michelle on March 29,” Biersch said in a brief statement issued today (Monday, March 18.)

Refunds for the Novato show can be made at place of purchase.

There are also HopMonk Taverns in Sebastopol and Sonoma.
