Alex de Grassi

Master guitarist Alex de Grassi grew up in San Francisco, but he was born in Japan.

That bit of trivia seems relevant this week, because he has composed original music to accompany Yasusjiro Ozu’s 1934 silent film, ‘A Story of Floating Weeds,’ which he’ll perform at a screening of the film at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, in Ukiah.

Doors open at Art Center Ukiah 203 S. State St. , at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are available at Dig! Music and at the Corner Gallery Ukiah, next to the art center,  for $12. Admission cost $15 at the door.

De Grassi was commissioned by the New York Guitar Festival to compose and perform this work, which he premiered in January 2006 in New York.  Saturday’s performance will be the West Coast premiere.

After the 84-minute film, and a brief break, de Grassi will answer questions from the audience.

Art Center Ukiah is a nonprofit center for community events, including concerts, films, art exhibits and art classes. Information: 462-1400.
