As reported in this blog two weeks ago, two murals by Sebastopol painter Dave Gordon will be installed this summer in the Visitors Center on Independence Mall in Philadelphia.

Before the murals, painted on polyester cloth, are shipped off July 16, Gordon will give locals a chance to see his work at an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 10, at his studio, 90 Timothy Road, just behind Roseland Prep in Santa Rosa.

The event’s guests of honor will include the “more than 20 local people who modeled in period costumes for this painting.”

A Sebastopol resident for the past 20 years, Gordon has been working on this project for the past year in his warehouse studio off Sebastopol Road.

After the rolled up murals arrive in Philadelphia, Gordon will spend the next two months finishing the final paintings for an October dedication.

This project was commissioned by the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia and the Visitors Center on Independence Mall. The design was approved by the community, National Park Service and an artist peer review panel.
