Mark di Suvero

Sculptor Mark di Suvero will be honored Nov. 16 at the 2011 Bay Area Treasure Award Dinner at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

This annual lifetime achievement award recognizes Bay Area artists who have made significant contributions to the history of contemporary art.

Now based in New York, di Suvero was born in Shanghai, China, in 1933, and moved to San Francisco with his family in 1941. He lived near Petaluma from 1975 to 1988 and still has a studio there.

Di Suvero’s work can be found in some of the best art museums across the nation , including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. His work is also in museum collection in England, Sweden, Germany and Australia.

In March, di Suvero was awarded the 2010 National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama.
