The Narrow Way Stage Co.  production of  “Riff Raff,” film actor Laurence Fishburne’s play about about two small-time Brooklyn hoods fleeing a drug deal gone wrong, opened Sept. 25 and runs through Oct. 11 at the Studio in the 6th Street Playhouse.

“Riff Raff” tickets cost $15-$20. 52 W. Sixth St., Santa Rosa.  523-4185, 6thstreetplayhouse.com, narrowwaystage.com.

For those who haven’t encountered this theater troupe yet, here is an  excerpt from an article I wrote from the current Santa Rosa magazine:

The Narrow Way Stage Company, founded four years ago by students in the Santa Rosa Junior College theater program, has no home of its own so far.

The troupe has performed in Cotati, Sonoma and Rohnert Park, but most often lands at the Glaser Center, formerly a movie theater, in downtown Santa Rosa. The company performed two Shakespeare plays in the courtyard there this past summer.

“We want to do plays that deserve to be done, but don’t get done because people don’t necessarily know them,” said Nick Christenson, Narrow Way’s artistic director.

Chris Ginesi, Narrow Way’s executive director, added that the company’s repertoire has included not only newer works, but also Shakespeare and the popular farce, “Noises Off!”

The coming Narrow Way season includes short works by David Mamet,  “Cyrano de Bergerac,” Shakespeare’s “Richard III” and an original adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland,” Ginesi said.

“We go out there and put on plays that mean something us, and relate to the greater community, not necessarily the ones that sell the most tickets,” Christenson explained.

Narrow Way also aims to recruit and present new local talent.

“Initially, our goal was to give people a chance to do roles they might not have a chance of getting if they auditioned someplace else,” Christenson said.
