Dr. Elmo

Elmo Shropshire was once a humble Northern California veterinarian.

Then, 30 years ago, he recorded a Christmas novelty tune called “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.”

And he became Dr. Elmo.

At 3 p.m. Saturday, March 13, Dr. Elmo and his bluegrass band, Wild Blue, will perform at the Sonoma County Bluegrass and Old Time Festival this weekend in Sebastopol.

Dr. Elmo, who recently released his “Bluegrass Christmas” CD, will be among more than half a dozen acts at the 10th annual  fest, which runs from 1 to 9 p.m Saturday at the Sebastopol Community Center, 390 Morris St., Sebastopol.

Other performers include Blue & Lonesome, the Kathy Kallick Band, Lone Prairie, Rita Hosking & Cousin Jack, Evo Bluestein and 49 Special.
