Still haven’t heard back from the “American Idol” people?

There is an alternative.

Jim Crosthwaite of First Step Sports Marking Group has come up with a vocal competition for would-be stars called “NorCal Sings!” — whose sponsors include Westfield Malls and Borders Books.

And this contest will come to you.

After auditions in Fairfield in February and Roseville earlier this month, “NorCal Sings!” comes to Borders Books, 2825 Santa Rosa Ave., Santa Rosa, from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, March 28. The traveling series of auditions concludes April 10 in Sacramento.

The one-time registration fee is $45, and the number of contestants is limited to 100 per genre at each location. There are three genre: (1) rock, pop and country; (2) country and musical theater; (3) classical.

In addition to cash prizes of up to $1,000 each, six winners will get photo shoots, sound recordings, videos and professional vocal coaching sessions, and will be scheduled for public appearances.
