'The Art Is Medicine Show'

The Imaginists, an experimental theater company based in Santa Rosa’s A Street arts district, has won a $10,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The grant will support the company’s “Art is Medicine Show (El Show el Arte es Medicina)” in a series of free, bilingual performances in public places.

The Imaginists will present “Art is Medicine Show” in rotation with Federico Garcia Lorca’s “The Billy-Club Puppets” this summer.

The shows will tour by bicycle caravan in July and August.

For five years, the Imaginists have been creating original, bilingual, community-based performances, both at their theater and other venues.

“This summer will be our fifth anniversary bicycle tour,” said Amy Pinto, the company’s artistic director.

“With this support from the NEA … we can take more performances to the Redwood Empire Food Bank’s summer lunch sites, and, in addition, tour Lorca’s ‘The Billy-Club Puppets’ to local parks on the weekends,” she added.

The Imaginists will offer internships to high school seniors and college level students to ride with the show, along with its core group of professional actors.”
